My Life Saver

POLO:
Saving my life from sleeping in the class since Jun 2012.
(especially Elementary Stochastic Modelling class by Dr. T)

Surprising I get the highest coursework mark compared to all my subjects this semester.
Must be thanks to POLO.

In Setapak, this cost me about RM 0.55
In PJ, this cost me about RM 0.99 (Damn, saya ditipu!)

My study life (Week 10-14)

Almost 9 months I didn't draw any comics.
I don't think I am that busy and I always wonder what am I doing for the whole 9 months.
Whenever my friends asked me out, I will reject them.

Maybe I will draw what happened from Week 1 to Week 9 next time.
But here what happened from Week 10 to Week 14.

(click on the picture to enlarge)

Probably I will need an ambulance very soon.
Anyone want to call 999 for me?

I hope I won't die before Final Exam.

Statisticians probably do it...

  • Statisticians do it continuously but discretely.
  • Statisticians do it when it counts.
  • Statisticians do it with large numbers.
  • Statisticians do it with significance.
  • Statisticians do it on random walks.
  • Statisticians do it stochastically.
  • Statisticians do it. After all, it's only normal.
  • Statisticians do it with standard deviations.
  • Statisticians do it with 95% confidence.
  • Statisticians do it with only a 5% chance of being rejected.

Mathematical Model

Finally, I finished reading one book: First Course In Mathematical Modeling by Frank  R. Giordano. This book took me almost a month to finish. Thank god. This book is quite useful and I have learned a lot of things because most of the things that I learned in degree level related to statistics and involved a linear function. But how to model something before collecting and after collecting your data? what if something is nonlinear? What needs to be to be taken into account?

I learned Survival Models, Loss Models, Applied Statistical Models, Stochastic Processes, Linear Models and many other models but most of the model involved more towards Statistics but this book more towards Mathematics without considering mean, variance and so on.

In Chapter 1, the author demonstrates a simple model and how it suppose to looks like.
In Chapter 2, what kind of processes involved to do modelling.
In Chapter 3, how to fit a model...using your data to fit a model or using your model to fit a data.
In Chapter 4, doing some experimental works to confirm your model.
In Chapter 5, using simulation to simulate your sample from population data.
And the rest of the chapters are more related to model certain situations and how to optimize your models.
Besides that, this book also shows some examples related how to model your situation related to physics, wars, economy, biology, interest rate, cooking (how long to roast your turkey? lol), drugs (pharmaceutical) and so on.

Honestly, this is kind of subject that should be teach during Form 6 or Degree level because most of the examples are using very simple secondary school maths and then relates it to applications rather than ask us to memorize all the formulas.

Now is time to start my project and study for Final.
Final Exam Countdown: 20 days.

Mathematics: Roast a turkey, need how long arh?

Okay, I confess that I never roast a turkey or eat a turkey before...but a chicken, yes!
It just so happens that when I'm was studying this book: First Course in Mathematical Modeling by Frank R. Giordano...I came across this interesting example.

This book in page 324 stated that

One of the general rule for roasting a turkey is the following: Set the oven to 400 ° F (204.44 °C) and allow 20 min per pound for cooking.
1 pound = 0.4536 kg , 1 kg = 2.2462 pound
How good is this rule?

So, this book started with some assumptions, model the formula and testing the results.

Please be reminded that assumptions are not always hold, formula is not always true and the results are probably not always close to what we want but we are trying to approximate the results here...

Let:
t = cooking time for the turkey
*t certainly depend on the size of the turkey (all the turkeys certainly have different size) but we assume turkets are similar.

l = length of the turkey ( uncooked meat)

ΔTm = the difference between the temperature of the raw meat and the oven

ΔTc = the difference between the temperature of the cooked meat and the oven

k = coefficient of heat conduction for a particular uncooked food

Model:
t = f(ΔTm , ΔTc, k, l)

So, after some extensively using some tricks we arrive at the formula

where t W2/3

I'm not going to derive the whole formula here because I'm sure nobody going to bother about it. The W suddenly appear in the formula because we know W l3
*The main reason is I'm lazy to type the whole thing out*

Just convince yourself the formula is like that. =)

This formula t W2/3 means the required cooking time is proportional to weight raised to the two-thirds power.

Be patient with me, I almost done...

Take for an example:

If
t1 hours are required to a turkey weighing W1 pounds and
t2 = is the time for a weight of W2 pounds,
then our formula become...

Let's consider we finally cooking a  real 10 kg turkey vs a real 3 kg chicken.

According to the our rule, the ratio of cooking time is given by

But, if we use our formula, after we substitute into it

So our rule tells us that it will take 3.33 times as long to cook a 10 kg turkey compare to cook a 3 kg chicken and our formula tells us it will only take 2.23.

Which one is correct?

I don't know. We certainly need to test our formula or our model to make sure it is correct. Testing the results part is in the book, please read if you want to know but I'm not really sure whether our book gives a correct from a real world data or not.

I just want to say...finally we have at least a formula for cooking a turkey!

Bird Poop

This afternoon when I was washing my car, I found that there are some bird poops on it. I was interested to know and eager to make use of some probability courses that I have learnt in my statistics class.

Let start with X denote the number of bird poop that dropped on my car. We know that X follows Poisson distribution with mean λ = 1 bird poop per week.

Poisson formula:
 P(X=x) = λ^x (e^-λ) /x!  for x=0,1,2,3...

Question:
1. What is the probability that I will get at least 8 bird poops on my car this week?
P(X ≥8) = 1- [P(X=0)+P(X=1)+ ...P(X=7)] = 0.000010249

Probability that I will get at least 8 bird poops on my car this week is around 0.000010249!

2.What is the probability that I will get exactly 8 bird poops on my car this week?
P(X=8) = 1^8 (e^-1) / 8! = 0.000009124.

Probability that I will get exactly 8 bird poops on my car this week is around 0.000009124!

Conclusion:
The probability of getting 8 bird poops or at least 8 is so low but I still get it. Dafuq stupid birds!
FU birds, I will panggang you next time if you ever poop on my car again!

I'm confused.

After so many years of searching, I believe I'm still don't understand a lot of things in this world.
If I need to make a list, I believe the list will go on until I die.

The first question that I remember I asking myself is, "Why the bubble is in sphere shape?".
When is it I asking myself that question...ohh, I'm just 5 years old.
The second question that I remember I asking myself is, "How rainbow exist and why its existence important?".

Then...
What is the beyond the border or outside of my house?
Am I different compared to others?
Why am I able to do some thinking?
If each religions promoting peace, why are they fighting against each other?
If each religions promoting love, why are they fighting against homosexuals?
Where is our God?
Is there an absolute answer for everything?
Between black and white, is there any gray area?
Is there any parallel world?
Why do we exist?
If Herodotus, Plato, Aristotle, Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, Archimedes, Euclid, Bernhard Riemann and many others great scientists or mathematicians do not exist, how would our history changed?
If the apple was not falling on Isaac Newton's head, would the history changed?
How should we solve the mystery of our mind?
What is the mystery of Mathematics, Science, Logic, Creativity and Consciousness? What lies beyond?
What is the most ideal world?

...and many many more.

Some of the questions are indisputable and some are unattainable. For those unanswerable will be discarded.
Yet, we are keeping answer for our needs.
We are really one mysterious creature.

Activities and Communication

I'm taking three subjects this semester.
And I started to plan what to do for next semester project.

Perhaps I worry too much...
I totally lost all my mood to communicate with all the people around me.

Step 1: Enter Facebook, scroll down the list to find people to spam.

Nah, he is too busy...
oh that one, tak kenal dia pun...
why she on my friend list?...
why he didn't online???..
last time he didn't reply me...I'm not gonna talk to him again!
Ok, no mangsa for me to spam.

Step 2: Close Facebook, open 9Gag.

Wow...that's funny post! I feels like want to comment...nah, too lazy...
Next post!
Next!
Next!
Next!
...
 That's all?
(All to lazy to comment)

Step 3: Close 9Gag, open Blog to find some interesting blogs...

Hmm..should I comment on this? I afraid I will hurt their feeling...will I?
I feels like want to attack this stupid fellow! Look at what he wrote!
She is damn funny...wait...not really...
Tak ada blog yang funny pun~

Step 4: Close Blog...check email..check Youtube.

Step 5: Lower my expectation and repeat Step 1 to 4 again.

That's pretty sum up all my activities...besides studying.

Sometimes, I really lazy to communicate with people because i) they have strange ideas ii) I don't know what he/she's talking about iii) we don't have the common 'key' or iv) I totally hate you.

And, I wonder why I have so less friends. -.-

The Animal School: A Fable

I read this piece of story in "7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey". It was written by Dr R.H Reeves. I want to share it, so people able to understand that school, college, and university are not the only place we can show our intelligence or talents.

Once upon a time the animals decided they must do something heroic to meet the problems of a “new world” so they organized a school. They had adopted an activity curriculum consisting of running, climbing, swimming and flying. To make it easier to administer the curriculum, all the animals took all the subjects.

The duck was excellent in swimming. In fact, better than his instructor. But he made only passing grades in flying and was very poor in running. Since he was slow in running, he had to stay after school and also drop swimming in order to practice running. This was kept up until his webbed feet were badly worn and he was only average in swimming. But average was acceptable in school so nobody worried about that, except the duck.

The rabbit started at the top of the class in running but had a nervous breakdown because of so much makeup work in swimming.

The squirrel was excellent in climbing until he developed frustration in the flying class where his teacher made him start from the ground up instead of the treetop down. He also developed a “charlie horse” from overexertion and then got a C in climbing and D in running.

The eagle was a problem child and was disciplined severely. In the climbing class, he beat all the others to the top of the tree but insisted on using his own way to get there.

At the end of the year, an abnormal eel that could swim exceeding well and also run, climb and fly a little had the highest average and was valedictorian.

The prairie dogs stayed out of school and fought the tax levy because the administration would not add digging and burrowing to the curriculum. They apprenticed their children to a badger and later joined the groundhogs and gophers to start a successful private school.
“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”
― Albert Einstein

1/3 Completed

So fast half of the year already gone.
I still got one more year to go!
Just finish 1st semester by taking 4 subjects,
but I already feel mentally breakdown not to mention the crying part.

This semester I took 4 subjects again. Probably.
All the subjects even tougher than the previous semester.
More assignments, more tutorials and more notes.

Then I need to decide what project to do and need to find supervisor.
Oh god, why?

Be patient, Vincent, be patient.
One more year, then I can shout to the world that I'm free.

Oyasuminasai.

Chapter 117: The Story of Sinful Malaysian

I was chatting with CL and then he showed me this link : http://myfootprint.org/
From the name, I thought something to do with comparing our feet. No, I was wrong.

This website will gives a test to measures our carbon footprint.
According to him, if everyone on the planet lived his style, we would need 2.21 Earths. Haha.
Of course, curiosity killed the cat. I give it a try then my score is:

2.03 Earths!

According to CL, our scores just an average for Malaysian.
After thinking we are so sinful to the Mother of Earth and we should redeem ourselves by suicide, at the moment I wanted to drink my Dettol...I decided to check other countries.

Source:

OMG! Look at USA.
Almost 10 Global hectares per person!
Yay! there are so many sinful countries than Malaysia (for 2003).
Maybe I'm not that so sinful after all. Hehe.

Linear Model

We are supposed to hand-in our assignment last Wednesday.
Since none of us done yet, we are able to delayed it to next two weeks.
After banging the wall, pulling almost all my hair out, shouting crazily in my room, crying for the whole day, almost-want-kill-all-the car-drivers-with-my-excellent-driving-skills, and praying, I still unable to solve my assignment.

The problem is:

THE ASSIGNMENT IS TOO DIFFICULT! NONE OF US KNOW HOW TO DO. NIAMA!
Oh my-self...I wonder how I going to hand in my assignment next ...err..week~~
By the time, I finished writing my post...sudah pukul 12. Jam berlalu dengan kejam...

If anyone think why I keep whining and think my assignment is easy...nah, I post it here...

Any hero want to save me by provide me some ideas for how to solve it?

Education

My water heater was broken.
I bathed in cold water for almost a week.
I admit even when I was studying in boarding school, I really tak tahan bath in cold water especially in the early morning.

Then my father asked me to fix it myself.
I looked at him, he looked at me. O.O
He asked whatever we learn how to change plug or not in school.
He said he learned it during his secondary school...wow...I wonder what I learned in my secondary school.

Tak guna punya Pendidikan.

"No, tak pernah...we only learned theory", I said. (in cantonese)

That is the moment I feel I want to tear my PMR results.
Apa guna Kemahiran Hidup dapat A but I don't even know how to change a simple plug?

But at least I learned "How To Change Your Plug" today.
If your plug rosak, please go hire someone (not me) to change for you.  XD

Laziness

Sometimes, I feel like I'm that kind of hangat-hangat tahi ayam person.

I feel I want to finish reading ONE book per week but lastly it took me TWO weeks.
I feel I want to go jogging THREE times a week but I only jogging for beginning and end of the year. Itupun tak sampai 2 minggu. Every night, I sleep at ONE or TWO a.m because I need to rush assignments. End up, I'm too tired for jogging.

I thought I can finish and try to finish all my assignments by this weekend but THREE of my assignments still lying on my desk.
Last week haven't finish because Saturday need to go back to Kampar for Chin Ming (mother side). This week haven't finish because Sunday need to go for Chin Ming (father side).

Next week, need to hand in 3 assignments and having 1 test.
Next next week, need to hand in 1 assignments and having 1 test also.
Next next next week got presentation.

Now I totally demotivated and lazy to do anything because I don't know where to start. Everything is so messed up. Banyak kerja tapi tak mau bekerja.

Let's go for mogok! Oh wait, I can't...

Independent

Sometimes when you study, you are hoping to be the one who knows everything.
It is because you hope to be smarter than everyone or maybe you hope to gain enough knowledge compare to others.
Of course, it is sort of satisfaction when you know everything.
So when people ask,"Have you done your assignments/ tutorials/homework?"
I can confidently and proudly say,"Yes, I did."
I hold the same principle since standard 2.

This is because during standard 2, my class monitor is a hardworking person. He is a Malay.
What he likes?
He likes to get Number 1.
Number 1 to come early and stand in front during assembly.
Number 1 to hand in homework.
Number 1 to leave during break.
Number 1 in almost everything.
Until one day I hand in quickly than he do.
Yes, I like to defeat others when I 'tak puas hati'.
I think I need to thank him for making me who I am today.

Besides that, you know you can depend on yourself. And less rely on others.

But...

What if you don't know and others depend on you because they think you are smart?
Then I need to start to think thousand of ways to solve the problem.
I do not hope to disappoint other people or..I do not hope to disappoint myself.

Today is the day I feel like want to collapse because everyone is looking at me for assignment.
Today is also the day I hope someone can outsmart me, so I looking at people instead.

Now, how I going to do the assignment?

Degree Convo

Attended my convo yesterday.
Mami knew I love Doraemon.
So she bought me RM60 flower with Doraemon in it.
Thanks papa, mami and sis.

The smell of the flower is so strong, its still lingering in my room.

Someone

Sometimes...
...when you are too boring to do your assignments (I have 6 assignments which need to hand-in in the next 3 weeks)...

OR

...when you are too tired because you need to read and read and read to prepare for Research Proposal (I have 2 books to read)...

OR

...when you are too stress to prepare for your coming test and quiz...

You hope someone is there to help you, console you, giving you a hug or someone that can talk to you.

When is that 'someone' going to appear in my life?

My life mostly at home (room) > stuck in traffic jam > PC block > stuck in traffic jam > home (room)...

Looks like kinda hard to find 'someone'...

Chinese New Year 2012

Monday, 23 Jan 2012

Back to my mom's hometown at Kampar. I took less than 2 hours...because I speed all the way. No car, no traffic jam, niceee. Next year my aim is 1 hour.We stayed for a night. I'm thinking how long we haven't go back to Kampar. 1 year? 2 years? but the house still look the same.

Tuesday, 24 Jan 2012

Woke up early in the morning as early as 6am. We were late for breakfast because someone still sleeping. Then we speed all the way to Penang. They all crazy one, need to drive so fast meh? 100, 110, 120, 130, 140...that's the fastest speed my car can go. I almost have mini heart-attack when my meter almost hits 130 then 140. Let's hope I won't get summon.

Total car went to Penang = 6 (including mine).
Total people went to Penang = 29 (including me).

First time I drive to Penang...

We checked-in at Stallions Apartment Penang. We were rested a while. Then we started our journey again.

Went to Snake Temple

Taking our lunch at Bukit Genting Hill (Leisure Park & Restaurant)

We went back to apartment to rest because we (the drivers) are too tired. At night, we went to Kek Lok Si Temple.

After we stepped out of our car, our auntie called my mom. She told us, our house got broken into.

Benda saya yang kena curi = my pc charger,  my-almost-spoil-speaker, my-almost-spoil-mouse, my hard disk, my whole box of CNY cards (wtf he going to do with it?) and two of my financial calculators. What a bastard. If I found you, I gonna skin you alive.

Really ruined my mother, my sister and my mood that day. I think not only us, but all the other families lost their mood as well.

Later we moved in a circle to find a way to going up there to visit the Guan Yin...but there is no other way except taking the cable car. Then we planned to come again next day.

Wednesday, 25 Jan 2012

We went to Bukit Bendera by taking cable car. Nice view and cool.

 Me, my sister and mom

At Wat Buppharam Thai Buddhist Temple

At Burmese Buddhist Temple

Temple opposite the Burmese Buddhist Temple

Then we went to eat at Anjung Gurney. The place is terrible, we didn't even bother to take photo. The place is a disaster, traffic jammed here and there. We almost walked 700 meters just to arrive at the food court because we parked really far. My other cousin who drives, walked almost twice our distance. My other uncle need to make a few rounds just to find parking. By the time we finished our meal, he just arrived. The food really sucks. I almost vomit. The service is terrible and horrible. Next time, this place is a NO-NO. I totally blacklisted this place..

Habis makan, we balik tidur.

Thursday, 26 Jan 2012

Bangun pagi, gosok gigi...because someone wake us up with the alarm clock. WTH, all of us sudah bangun but the owner of the phone still slept like a pig. Then all of us started to packing, then we having our breakfast. Lastly we went to the beach near the restaurant (Restoran Batu Ferringhi Bistro) for swimming and playing with the sand.

Ooo, that's me with the 'yam' face XD

We bought some local products at Wah Tai Native Products Co.

She was thinking whatever want to buy or not. XD

My niece and me. The moment we took ferry.

My car. 'Sei foh' two times that day. I almost had mini heart attack twice.

Having lunch at some seafood resto.

Then I speed all the way from Penang to KL. Really miss my home.
Now is the moment to go to my friend's house to bai nian! Let's go to take more ang pows!

Sunday, January 8, 2012

A Simple Outing

Yesterday, we planned to have a simple gathering. Before that, I went to buy GPS from Low Yat.

Crowded, a lot of human beings. Even walking, a few steps, was difficult. After looking around to find what I wanted, then a guy came to serve me. I shoot him with a lot of questions like is this original?, what else model do you have?, got free gifts? etc. Let's hope he didn't hate me or something.

Tada. This thing, it costs me RM 450. You better behave. If I still sesat, I won't hesitate to throw you out of the car's window. XD

At 2.30 pm, I went to watch The Darkest Hour (3D) with CL and Jun. The movie, really worse than I expected, really not recommended. Everything looks fine, just that, nothing great happened except the poster and the trailer.

Wow, is that a starfish? I didn't see that in the movie!

Then, we went to eat at Wendy's. We walked to Pavilion and took some photos.

Probably our last photo.

We walked to KLCC afterwards, we went shop by shop, tried out some clothes, gave Jun a lot of comments why she should buy this skirt instead of that. She said she can't sleep if she don't buy it. At the end, we successfully persuade her to buy. We walked until 10 pm.

Overall, the outing was fun and enjoyable. Let's meet again in the future!
